Resistance
is more than the absence of forward movement and the expression of no.
It is also the unconscious influence of the personality upon something
it does not yet fully embrace. A momentary pause, resistance allows the
expression of the personality into the process of creation.
Every
action of expansion opens the fullness of the personality to engage
with what is offered, whether it is deeper love, greater ease or simply
quiet of the mind. As the personality recognizes this opportunity it
will either choose to engage or turn its awareness elsewhere. In doing
so, it is choosing how it would like to create; consciously stepping
forward, or stepping back into how it already knows things to be.
The
personality may choose to do this over and over again, seeming to
recreate the past, while developing the capacity to embrace more fully
what is offered. It may choose to do this even in the face of
dissatisfaction with a particular life event, such as a relationship.
Although
some part of the personality may very well desire things to be
different, even long for them to be different, this other aspect of the
personality may hold its stance. Recognizing the presence of resistance
allows the personality to consciously choose where it would like to
create life from, what it would like to embrace.
When resistance
is present, it may be obvious. You might actually hear or know the
presence of 'no' in your system; body, mind or emotions. Most often
resistance is unconscious, hidden beneath the acts of forgetting,
losing things, not following through. It may even be as elusive as to
not be recognized, no matter how much your mind looks around for its
telltale signs.
When the mind is engaged in resistance, it is
often quite committed to its position. It sees this place, wherever you
may be in the continuum, as safe and familiar. Often the mind is
choosing to not step forward and explore the resistance because it sees
its very existence tied to the presence of the resistance itself.
One
aspect of consciousness, fixed in this position can stop the flow of
forward movement and evolution. It can also propel exponential growth
once discovered and transformed.
The presence of resistance is
inherent in spiritual enlightenment and development. It occurs in
stages that are recognizable. The stages often reappear throughout the
evolution of the personality and Soul as partners, each time offering
new insights and more fuel to the process of enlightenment itself.
When
beginning to meditate, for instance, the mind may find ways to resist
the opportunity to expand. It may crave the presence of peace, desire a
life free from stress. It may even believe that it cannot meditate,
holding to the belief that it is too hard.
Being too busy, not
able to find time to even try meditation may arise. All the while,
another aspect of the mind is aware of the benefits of meditation,
perhaps remembering a moment of expansion that has recently occurred
and desiring to be back there once again.
Resistance signifies
the personality’s influence over a certain situation. The Soul does not
operate from resistance. Recognizing this allows the mind to realize it
has choice in the given situation. Allowing the 'why', the reason for the
resistance to be explored, to rise to the surface for discovery, opens
the bridge between unconscious awareness and conscious action to begin.
It may be that the personality is frightened about the forward movement
that is already present. It may wonder what life will look like if
there is too much change.
Regardless of the underlying reasons
or consciousness for a particular moment of resistance, the process of
transformation is the same. First, recognize the presence of
resistance. Assume it is present. Since we are all spiritual beings on
a human path, we are all learning how to be here now and embrace our
largeness as an expression of the divine. This implies we are learning
how to navigate the world of form, which is slower in vibration,
through the platform of light. We are exploring how to be the largeness
while engaging with form.
Next listen to what the resistance is
offering you as a gift. Does it reveal awareness about your history?
Does it illuminate the beliefs that are present about the world and
what you believe is possible? What is the story that it is sharing with
you?
To discover this more fully, ask this question:
If
__________________ were to happen (the desired activity where you have
recognized the presence of resistance) then
this________________________would also occur.
Take a few moments to fill in the blanks. You may have more than one answer to what the mind believes may occur.
It
may be for instance, that if you created greater financial abundance in
your life, that this aspect of resistance believes you will also have
more responsibility. It may view responsibility as undesirable. It may
even begin to reveal all the places it currently feels burdened by
responsibility already.
Some of this content or awareness may
seem familiar to you already. Other thoughts that arise may surprise
you. You may even view them as foolish. Often the layers of
consciousness of the mind and emotional system that resist something in
life are not rational. They are however, valid. Each layer of awareness
allows the opportunity for the personality to begin to recognize what
has been operating in the background all along. It may be as
significant as to color your world view, like a lens through which all
aspects of creation are seen.
Once you recognize some of the
content of the resistance for this particular situation, invite it into
your heart. You might imagine this to be embracing a young child that
is frightened. Often these places of holding back forward movement are
rooted in fear. Being kind and compassionate opens the opportunity for
them to be received, rather than pushed against. Pushing against
resistance, or attempting to push through a given obstacle, will only
allow the resistance to deepen. Respecting its position and needs will
allow it to soften its stance.
Now that you have learned
something about this particular expression of resistance you have the
opportunity to open to greater flow and ease. There has been a release
of stored energy, energy that has been held in the resistance itself
and the absence of flow.
You may recognize it in other areas
of your life as well. They may or may not be connected to the area that
first revealed the resistance. In this way, the usable energy generated
through the transformation of not knowing the reason for the presence
of resistance in a given situation opens the doorway to greater
awareness and ease in other areas of life.
Each time we discover
the reasons for the resistance, the momentary pause from forward
movement, we allow more of who we are to be present to the act of
creating. Through transforming what has not until a moment ago been
ready to transform, we join the Soul’s rhythm of growth and
exploration. We begin to recognize the cycles of expansion and
contraction of the personality and learn how to enhance the ease from
which we can create.
