The Soul, each time it returns to earth, creates opportunity to explore specific aspects of learning and consciousness. It may be that a Soul has come to learn about love. It may do this in a variety of forms, through intimate relationships, through being a parent, through helping others to explore love, the list is endless. How a Soul explores a particular quality is not important. What is significant is that the Soul has the opportunity for such exploration.
This exploration is the Soul’s purpose, or Life Work. The Soul arrives to this incarnation with the intention that it will explore its Life Work. It has chosen circumstances of its birth to support this process. The Soul also works in partnership with its personality steward to be able to bring this purpose more fully into fruition. It supports the personality through its stages of growth and learning. It provides comfort and solace to the personality as the personality learns about the world of form, about the needs of others and the emotional qualities that personalities share.
Through all of this, the Soul seeks opportunity in each life experience of the personality steward to continue exploration of its Life Work, its expression of purpose. It may be, for instance, that a job chosen by the personality steward provides opportunity for the Soul to contribute its consciousness and energy. Although it may not be apparent to the personality, the Soul becomes engaged in its Life Work at each junction possible.
At some point in the evolution of the personality, the personality begins to question its purpose. Seeking greater connection and contribution to something larger, the personality starts to recognize unrest from within. This unrest may take the form of dissatisfaction with what it currently sees as its life work, or it may be a hunger so deep that it must be filled. Often searching, exploration of a spiritual path begins or deepens at this phase.
Not all personalities will actively engage in seeking out their purpose. In this case, the Soul will continue to find and accept those opportunities that arise in everyday life from where it may explore its purpose. Without the active participation of the personality, the Soul’s purpose is limited.
Often during this early phase of exploration of purpose, the personality sees it as separate from the Soul’s purpose. When speaking about the desire for purpose or Life Work, the personality will often use the word my, as in 'my life work.' Here the personality has not yet made the transition to active partnership with the Soul and is coming from the orientation of the personality. Because of this, it uses the skills and attributes of the personality to understand and explore life work. It seeks to know what its life work is, to have definition and understanding much like it would in searching out a career or educational path. Here the mind of the personality is very active, seeking to exert its skills, beliefs and expectations.
It may be that the personality’s interest in life work is so great that it is now willing to explore surrendering to concepts it has not previously understood. With practice, the personality learns to step outside the personality itself as the operating platform. It recognizes that there is more to it than what it has been able to know and identify up until this point. Here the personality learns to blend, to trust and to open to the Soul’s input. At this point, life work becomes the purpose and Life Work of the Soul.
To help bridge between the personality’s desire to know what its Life Work is and the ability to manifest its Life Work requires an active partnership with the Soul. The ability of the Soul to be present more fully as the steward for the personality now becomes significant. You may recall that the personality is the steward for the Soul. Without the willingness and presence of the personality, the Soul cannot have impact.
As the stages of Soul union continue to unfold, the personality is more willing to engage in activities of service. The personality knows its purpose, even if it does not understand its purpose, and cannot illustrate the concepts in a way that satisfies the mind. Knowing has moved to the deeper core of Soul to personality union, where the knowing is larger than words could ever describe.
To help the personality move through some of the stages mentioned here, it is useful for the mind to have an image of life work that is inclusive, rather than limited. The thought, “I am a teacher,” is an example of limited thinking of the personality attempting to find a way to connect with Life Work. The thought, “I am here to assist in the transformation of consciousness,” is an example of inclusive thinking. It may be that teaching is part of how the Soul and personality assist in the transformation of consciousness. It is likely that this would be just one of the many forms that the personality would use. By opening to the larger inclusive consciousness, the personality creates the opportunity to move more fully into alignment with the purpose of the Soul, to create together as one.
